Iraq - Mercury 1971-1972

During the winter of 1971-1972, pink-colored seed grain coated with a mercury fungicide was ground into bread and tragically consumed by Iraqis tragically exposing over 50,000 people. Children were among the 459 reported dead from the incident while over 6000 were hospitalized.

Love Canal Disaster - 1978

From 1942 to 1953 a landfill known was the love canal, was contaminated by Hooker chemical and then sold to the city after being covered up by layers of dirt. The city then allowed homes and schools to be built over the landfill and people started to feel the effects of the hazardous waste through sickness. The people living on top of the landfill were eventually resituated.

The Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS) was established in 1981. Its purpose is to certify toxicologists who are recognized by their peers for their expertise and sound scientific judgment. The Academy awards the title of Fellow to experts who meet the requirements of the ATS.

Times Beach - 1983

Dangerous levels of dioxin discovered in Times Beach, MO, in 1982 resulting from spraying contained oil to control dust. EPA orders the town evacuation and makes it a Superfund site. All residents gone by 1985 and the town demolished. It was the largest civilian exposure to dioxin in the United States.

A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, COX-2 selective inhibitor for treatment of osteoarthritis, produced by Merck & Co. and voluntarily withdrawn because of risk of heart attack & stroke in 2004.

Lake Nyos Event - 1986

Situated in Cameroon, Lake Nyos is a carbon-dioxide saturated lake as a result of the magma which lies beneath it. In 1986, the lake released a horrific amount of carbon dioxide and suffocated 1800 people along with livestock from the villages which surround it.
