A Small Dose of Toxicology: How Chemicals Affect
Your Health
This basic course covers the principles of toxicology and
health effects of chemical agents. It is designed for those who
may have little background in toxicology yet must deal with chemicals
in the home, at work, or at school. The course is designed for anyone
interested in better understanding chemicals and their health effects,
or wanting a refresher course on toxicology. The course identifies
potential health hazards of toxic chemicals and methods for preventing
exposure.
Typical Day Tow - A larger dose -->
A Larger Dose of Toxicology: How Chemicals Affect Your
Health
This is an advanced course designed for non-toxicologists who have
attended the basic “Small Dose of Toxicology” course
or who have some background in toxicology. This program will review
the basic principles of toxicology before focusing on state-of-the-art
research, risk assessment, and risk communication. Participants
will learn effects of chemicals on the body, why some people are
more sensitive than others, how to develop individual dose/response
curves, current research issues, ethical aspects of toxicology,
and how to communicate about hazards.
OBJECTIVES
1) Provide an introduction to the basic principles of toxicology
for those with little background in toxicology or those who wish
a basic refresher course.
2) Learn about the following: dose response, chemical carcinogenicity,
mechanisms of cellular toxicity, respiratory toxicology, neurotoxicity,
risk assessment, sensory system effects, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity
of lead and mercury.
Experienced lecture and course director - Steven
Gilbert has been a course director since 1993 - see
samples below.
Modify the course to meet your needs - Course
can be adjusted to meet your needs. For example, the one day course
can be modified to emphasize child health or worker health.
